Smart Sewer Infrastructure to be Discussed at WEF Collection Systems Workshop

Pre-conference event will be held on June 27

San Francisco, CA -- Understanding the physical, digital and management systems needed to make municipal sewer systems smart will be the focus of one of the technical workshops at the upcoming Water Environment Federation (WEF) Collection Systems Conference.

The WEF Collection Systems Conference, which highlights continued advances in the wastewater collection systems sector, will be held in Kansas City, MO, from June 28-30, 2023. The pre-conference workshop is scheduled for June 27.

Faced with the increasing costs of regulatory requirements, many utilities will be required to implement new approaches to extend their capital and operating budgets. It’s estimated that water and wastewater utilities could save up to $320 billion through implementing smart infrastructure. The workshop, Smart Infrastructure for Collection Systems, is chaired by Kyle Logue, a water sector manager for Greeley and Hansen, A TYLin Company, and will provide insights needed to reimagine how new and existing data, assets, and technology can be leveraged to improve the efficiency of sewer collection systems while preventing sanitary and combined overflows. Chris Dinsmore from the East Bay Municipal Utility District in Oakland, CA, will keynote the workshop with an overview of how his district approached smart collection systems. Other case studies from Reese Johnson of the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (OH) and Rosaleen Nogle from the Buffalo (NY) Sewer Authority will also discuss their experiences with implementing smart systems.

Other panels and presentations from leading industry experts will address the physical and digital elements of smart sewer systems and the challenges cities must overcome when considering the implementation of smart collection systems.
