Agrigento-Caltanissetta A19 Motorway, Sicily, Italy

TYLin participated in both the tender and final design stages for the Agrigento-Caltanissetta A19 Motorway project on the island of Sicily in Italy.

The Caltanissetta double-bored road tunnel is one of the main works of the A19 motorway from Agrigento to Caltanissetta in Sicily. This new motorway connects Porto Empédocle to the Caltanissetta junction. The project improves road connections to south Sicily by expanding the regional road network. It has a circular section with an excavation diameter of approximately 15.08 meters. Both tunnels are between 35 and 80 meters and extend for about 4 kilometers; a considerable part is below the City of Caltanissetta. Overburden ranges from 80 to 135 meters, except in the portals where it is limited to a few tens of meters. Each tunnel has been designed to hold a 2-lane track.

TYLin contributed to the tender and final design stages by assessing the geological parameters for 3D modeling of face conditions, geometrical and structural design of tunnel portals, base slab and thrust frame, and the definition of Tunnel Boring Machine launching methodology and excavation parameters follow-up.
