SEPTA Distributed Digital Content project

TYLin is developing a distributed digital content system solution for SEPTA to improve communication with its employees.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is a regional public transportation authority that provides a comprehensive transit network of buses, trains, trolleys, and subways to serve 3.9 million people in five counties in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. TYLin is working with SEPTA to specify a distributed digital content (DDC) system that will enhance communication and reach SEPTA’s more than 3,400 employees, including the 75% of staff who are front-line workers, with timely, accurate, and complete information.

The employee-centric digital communications system is being created for a distributed work force and will enable frontline staff to be as informed and engaged as corporate workers. The system will track how published information is performing and identify successful communications across regions, technologies, and types of workers. These insights will be used to adapt SEPTA’s communications strategy to provide messaging that works across a variety of systems and devices, from desktops to mobile phones and digital signage. The system will enable SEPTA to target and track who receives which information.

TYLin developed a list of requirements based on the scope of work and expanded it with information gathered from stakeholder meetings and observations at employee reporting locations where content will be pushed to digital signs. The system must be capable of distributing information to various SEPTA locations, including bus garages, rail reporting locations, lunchrooms, and more.

Project Highlights:

  • TYLin recommended SEPTA develop a strategic internal communication plan and enterprise project planning to work in conjunction with the system.
  • Multiple vendors were interviewed and their products investigated to confirm the marketplace has vendors that meet SEPTA’s requirements.
  • TYLin provided a high-level cost estimate for the complete system implementation, including 150 signs at 50 locations.
  • TYLin recommended a pilot program be performed with three vendors at five locations, including one headquarters and four remote sites.
