TYLin prepared an executive-level briefing comparison paper on the operational and economic effects of moving the real-time operations control and management systems from the SEPTA campus to cloud-based hosts.

TYLin and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) have enjoyed a long-standing relationship for more than two decades. SEPTA is a regional public transportation authority serving the City of Philadelphia and its surrounding counties. Its operation of buses, trains, trolleys, and subways provides a comprehensive transit network for commuters and residents.

As part of a continuous effort to operate more cost efficiently and employ modern information technology (IT) principles, SEPTA asked our team to examine the operational and financial tradeoffs for migrating selected real-time operations control and management systems from their campus to one or more cloud-based hosts.

Our extensive understanding of SEPTA, including its operational principles, the composition and skills of its IT and operational staff, and the unique requirements of their essential control systems, played a crucial role in this task. We created an executive-level briefing paper that effectively outlined the advantages and disadvantages of two options: managing and operating these systems in-house with internal staff or outsourcing them to a suitably qualified and available hosting service.
